Marist College Eastwood alumnus John Walker (Class of 1968) has been awarded the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice — the highest honour the Holy Father bestows upon members of the Church clergy and laity. The award was established in 1888 by Pope Leo XIII.

John said he “did not expect any award, let alone the Papal Medal,” and considers his parish work deeply fulfilling in its own right.
A Life of Parish Service
From 2004, John served as Business Manager for Coffs Harbour Parish, sitting on multiple diocesan boards and coordinating operations across parish and school institutions. Among his initiatives was the establishment of an after-hours care facility at St Augustine’s Primary School — a practical contribution to the families of the parish.
Bishop Greg Homeming presented the award, noting that “John has embodied the spirit of the St Augustine’s Parish through his actions and dedication.” Member of Parliament Kevin Hogan also acknowledged Walker’s contributions in Parliament.
John was quick to share the recognition: “It’s a joint effort from a number of dedicated people.”
The Association congratulates John Walker on this remarkable honour — a fitting recognition of a life of quiet, faithful service.
