The Quiet Achiever

Peter Ross left Marist College Eastwood in 1955 at the age of fourteen to help support his father. He would go on to become a police officer, run a food processing business, and operate as a boat captain at the 1997 World WaterSki Racing Championships — but it is his quiet, sustained commitment to the vulnerable that defines him.

In 1987 a priest asked Peter to help gather donations for families in need over Christmas. He agreed without hesitation, and from that single request grew an organisation he initially called Christmas for the Needy, which evolved into the Manning Foundation.

The Manning Foundation

The Foundation provides emergency provisions, clothing, transportation, and educational initiatives to vulnerable people across the community. Until 2020 it hosted approximately 230 attendees at its annual gathering — held at Steve Manning’s restaurant with the support of Tony and Lorraine Bonisoli and a network of Marist connections. It runs entirely on the work of thirty unpaid volunteers.

Peter has never sought recognition. He cannot point to degrees or formal qualifications. What he can point to is a Foundation that has quietly changed the lives of thousands over four decades — built on nothing more than a willingness to help when asked, and the persistence to keep going.

“His thoughtfulness and initiative has made an enormous difference to thousands of people over the years.”

The Association is proud to count Peter Ross among the Old Boys of Marist College Eastwood.
